Throwback Thursday: Esquivel’s THOR and LOKI

This post originally appeared on Panels, which is now Book Riot Comics

Several months ago, chatting with a friend produced an awesome revelation: somewhere out there, there was a four issue run about Loki being banished to Midgard and starting a rock band. I stored the title in my brain and set it aside for future exploration, when I had the chance to seek it out.

I didn’t really think about it again until I read a novel about a non-Marvel Loki and had the urge to read more in that vein. I sought out Loki: Ragnarok and Roll on comiXology and sat down for some fun.

Loki and the Tricksters

In a spectacular adventure, filled with color and snark, Loki ensnares the masses not with his trickery, but with his music. A supporting cast of characters features the members of his band, Loki and the Tricksters (of course) opposite Odin’s God Buddies, everyone from St. Gregory to the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) and everyone between. And Thor, of course.

Thor and Loki

I enjoyed the crap out of it.

So, of course, I was delighted to run into Eric M. Esquivel at Tucson Comic-Con this past weekend, where we were able to chat for a second about how much I loved Loki. He asked if I’d read Thor: Unkillable Thunder Christ, which he called his “audition” to Boom! for the Loki series.

I hadn’t.

Ho boy.

While Loki is filled with psychedelic color, Thor was done in clean Black and White. The latter is only connected to the former by characters, but its awesome insanity is obviously out of the same head.

Thor has pissed off his father for the final time; he will therefore receive Odin’s favoritest punishment: banishment to Midgard. Specifically, Chicago.

Thor in Chicago

Here, we meet some interesting superheroes, characters from The Blackest Terror, and they share with Thor thoughtful conversation about gods and religion. Also, a surprisingly small number of people get punched in the face. But considering it’s only 24 pages, we’ll let that slide.
