A Celebrity Bookshelf Snooping Wish List

Wallace Yovetich

Staff Writer

Wallace Yovetich grew up in a home where reading was preferred to TV, playing outside was actually fun, and she was thrilled when her older brothers weren’t home so she could have a turn on the Atari. Now-a-days she watches a bit more TV, and considers sitting on the porch swing (with her laptop) “playing outside”. She still thinks reading is preferable to most things, though she’d really like to find out where her mom put that old Atari (Frogger addicts die hard). She runs a series of Read-a-Longs throughout the year (as well as posting fun bookish tidbits throughout the week) on her blog, Unputdownables. After teaching for seven years, Wallace is now an aspiring writer. When I go to people’s houses I check out the bookshelf. No one is going to open their diary and say, “here, have a peek,” so the bookshelf is my next best thing (I’m curious like that). You can tell a lot by someone’s bookshelf, even if it’s just what they want you to think about them.

Sometimes I wonder what people think of me when they see my bookshelf, but then I remember how many people are a.) not as nosy and b.) not as judgmental as I am. That said, there are a lot of bookshelves I’d like to take a peek at (some just to see if there are any books on them at all).

If you could take a gander at any public figure’s (celebrity, author, politician, athlete, etc.) bookshelf, whose would it be?

Here’s who’s topping my list (all of whom I’d expect to have some damn good bookshelves):

David McCullough

Because can you imagine all of the titles he has for the research he’s done? His personal library is probably like the non-fiction section of the library.

*

Emma Roberts

Because she shares her latest reads on Instagram and they are almost always books that go onto being bestsellers.

*

Mindy Kaling

Because she is smart and funny, surely her library is the same.

*

Bill Clinton

No matter your political leanings or your thoughts on his moral character, if you don’t get dazzled when this man opens his mouth and starts charismatically telling you about all sorts of things you never knew you should care about (and then you suddenly do), then you have a valuable immunity to charm and intelligence (even his harshest critics don’t discount his intelligence). I can’t even when it comes to imagining which books he reads. I want to know.

*

Ann Patchett

A talented author and avid reader who co-owns a bookstore… how could her bookshelf not be spectacular?
