To get you started, here a few tips from the book:
1. Don’t fall for the addictive allure of email. Humans are addicted to feeling a sense of progress. Marking our emails as “read” fills this need incredibly well, but we rarely do our most productive work in email. To get the same satisfaction from other work, try baking progress indicators into your most important projects. It could be jotting down a few words in a journal, saving a new version of your file, or marking your progress on a visual chart above your desk.
2. Multi-tasking is a myth. While multi-tasking can feel productive, research shows that juggling two or more tasks means you will do all of those tasks more slowly and less effectively. In essence, your brain has to get back up to speed again each time you switch to a new task and back again. If you really want to be efficient, turn off your email, close Facebook and Twitter, and truly focus on the work at hand.
3. Alternate “dumb work” with “smart work.” Our brains are not designed to operate continuously. We are most productive when we alternate periods of intense focus with periods of rest. Rather than trying to work at a breakneck pace all day, try alternate 60-90 minute focus blocks (no multi-tasking!) with 30-45 minute blocks of mindless work, like simple admin tasks.
