We get the entertainment we deserve. To me, being entertained is having your mind engaged with the work of art on multiple levels. So I think a lot of what gets passed off as entertainment really does not qualify for that definition. It’s merely diverting at most.

I like this distinction between entertaining and diverting from Mr. Chabon.

$4,500 The advance that Soft Skull Press gave Evison for his ninth book, and first published novel, All About Lulu. The money was “paid out in two payments, half on signing, and half on publication.”

It’s rare to see writers talk real numbers about what they get paid for their novels. Much appreciated, Mr. Evison.
