While making books available is the primary goal of libraries, giving them a space to read is also important. It is a failing of many bookmobiles, which are great at coming to you, but usually not great at providing an inviting place to spend time with books.
This was the inspiration for the A47 Mobile Library, a project by Productura, a Mexican design studio. The A47 has space for more than 1200 books, but it doesn’t carry a full payload, so that it can make room available for people to read, browse, and just hang out around the books.
It makes its rounds in Mexico City and carries mostly art books by and about local artists. It also transforms into a multi-level reading space that can host events.
Pretty cool, right?
