One way physical bookstores can compete with online retailers is to be more fun. And what is more fun than a comic book store that looks like a bunch of comics? Probably nothing.
The wall shelves at Tokyo’s Tokyo are asymmetric just like the panels of a comic, and even include giant text bubbles.
The flat tables for general merchandise look like piles of comics, with upward curving pages that make it seem like they are in the process of being read.
The store was just completed this spring, and with shelves full of colorful comic-related merchandise, it looks even more like a comic (though I would pack those things tight to fill out the panels myself).
So comic-nerds and bookstore lovers, the next time you are in Tokyo, you have one more stop to add to your itinerary.
